Alabama Church School Law
You’re required to read, understand, and interpret the law for homeschooling in Alabama. This is important so you know where you stand and what’s expected of you the parent/teacher. Alabama State Church School Laws can be found here: https://hslda.org/hs101/
Remember to ALWAYS keep your paperwork available at any given time. It’s 100% legal to enroll in a church school under the Alabama state law. The main requirement as far as the Government/B.O.E. is you must turn in a church school enrollment form to your local superintendent. You can do this via mail or fax. But I always mailed a hard copy of ours.
What should you do if a public school official or truancy officer comes to your home to inquire why your child is not in school?
1. Start by asking them if they have checked with the local superintendent’s office (B.O.E.) because that’s where you’re required to turn your form into.
2. If tenacious, you can show them a copy of your church school enrollment form. You’re not required by law to show them anything else, other than your church school enrollment form.
3. Any other requests should be in writing and a copy of the written request sent into Alabama Learning Academy.
4. Remember to ask for their name, a business card, or ID.
5. It’s so important that you read, understand, and become familiar with the law and what is legally required of you.
6. If you run into any legal issues please contact HSLDA https://hslda.org/
A little bit about the basic law of Alabama on church schools. Not all of our policy, but how some work.
1. Enrolling in a church school:
You start by enrolling your child in a church school. If you decide you do not want to homeschool you have to enroll your child in either a church school, public school, private school, or a private tutor.
2. Submission of Church School Enrollment Form:
You’re required to submit your church school enrollment form into your local B.O.E. The church school enrollment form should be signed by the parent/guardian and the church school administrator. The law doesn’t require you to file your church school enrollment form annually.
3. Keeping attendance:
You must keep the attendance of any missed days. Remember we have 365 days to homeschool the required 180 days per school year.
4. Complying with policies set forth by the church school:
Some church schools have different policies that require more or less. You may require teacher qualifications to homeschool, required subjects, and days of education. You are responsible to comply with the policies of the church school.
